All people experience events and circumstances within each day that can stress us, excite us, frustrate us or in other ways impact our ability to remain regulated, alert and focused.  Some people are better at managing these emotions and others need to be taught.  Leah Kuypers, MAed., OTR/L introduced the idea of the zones of regulation as a "systematic, cognitive behavior approach used to teach self regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete zones".  The chart below highlights what each zone can look and feel like.

Once an individual is able to understand each zone and internalize how each one feels to him / her, then the individual can begin to work on learning strategies to bring oneself to the optimal green zone and maintain green zone alertness and regulation throughout the day.
